Dr. Mike Leong
Dr. Michael Leong begins his
30th year of coaching the
Roadrunners after personally
coaching 27th National Age group
championship teams in Cross
Country and over 35 individual
national age group champions in
track and field. Dr. Leong has also
coached at Villa Park HS in the
early 1980's (Century League
champions boys and 1st girls
championship team in Villa Park
History) and has coached Rialto
HS to back to back CIF division 1
Southern Section runer ups and to
the state championship meet.
Dave Japs would recruit Dr. Mike
to coach all the Roadrunners in
Orange County in 1980.
Dr. Mke began his running career at Villa Park HS in 1975 under 1972
Olympic Trials qualifier Dave White and legendary Coach Bob Mckie
competing from 1975-1977. He resurrected his running career by
running Roadraces and was recruited to run for UC Irvine while
attending UCI studying premed by All American Ralph Serna to try out
for the team. PCAA coach of the year Larry Knuth allowed Dr. Mike to
train and compete and at the same time Dr. Mike was coaching the
Roadrunners in Orange Country. Dr. Leong received the PCAA scholar
athlete award in 1981 and then began concentrating on marathons. To
date he has completed 19 marathons including Boston, Los Angeles,
New York, and the Big Sur marathons. Marathon PR 2:43. Dr. Mike
would return to the Inland Empire to begin his residency in Family
Practice @ San Bernardino Country Hospital and began to train the
Roadrunners in Rialto. After coaching Rialto HS for a year, Dr. Mike
began to rebuild age group Roadrunners the past few years.
